Truth and Trueing

A few years ago, I read Michael Meade’s book Fate and Destiny, The Two Agreements of the Soul.  Michael summed up my life journey thus far in a couple of sentences: “The native genius residing within each of us bears the innate gifts and talents we bring to the world and it intends to give them. The soul must be limited by fate, but it arrives gifted and aimed and dedicated to fulfilling its original agreement to contribute to a meaningful life.”

My fate was having a father that valued truth above all else. As a result, telling the truth and living with integrity were instilled in me at a very young age. One of my father’s favorite bible verses that he quoted frequently was: “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

As a child, I had no idea how that bible verse would shape my life path, nor did I know the Seeker was one of the archetypal patterns that supported my soul contract. A seeker lives in search of wisdom and truth. My journey began as it does with most seekers, with earthly curiosity.

A close family member was a builder and a finishing carpenter. For privacy, I will refer to him as William. William had started his exploration of building in the 1930’s by felling trees, hueing the logs and building log cabins and then homes. By the time I was born into the family, he had become a very skilled builder and finishing carpenter. He had a large workshop on his property and as a child I spent many hours there. I was eager to learn and he was happy to teach his skills. I was absolutely fascinated by the creation process. Pieces of rough wood became beautiful kitchen cabinets and I was able to see the process from start to finish. Trueing, bringing the pieces of wood into perfect alignment was William’s gift. The finished product reflected his genius. He taught me the art of trueing and despite being visually impaired, I discovered I had a natural ability to know when things were aligned. I might not have always been able to see it but I could feel it. I learned to trust that feeling.

By the time I left home at eighteen to continue my education, my motto was “the truth shall set you free”. The Seeker was leading me and instead of the truth and the freedom I was seeking, I found myself wandering like a lost soul. It wasn’t until I began to study the archetypes that I discovered I was stuck in the shadow expression of the Seeker. Shortly after that revelation, I came across a vlog where the etymology of the word ‘truth’ was being explored. I realized that I was attached to the Roman definition of the noun, ‘truth’, which was defined as absolute, a fact. There was another meaning, one from old German. It defined ‘truth’ as trustworthy, reliable, dependable, loyal and steadfast. These words described the qualities of a person living in alignment with their deeper truth. They practiced the verb form of ‘truth’ which was ‘to true’ or ‘trueing’. They could see what was out of alignment and knew what to do to bring it into alignment. They were considered to be trusted guides.

I had been so focused on the Roman definition of ‘truth’, I was searching for my truth in the absolute, as if it would be a fact. Yet, the verb to true, the very skill I had been taught by William and that had been embodied early in my life as a feeling, was all I needed. My search was over. I had been gifted the natural ability and then had been taught how to develop the skill further. What I sought had been with me the entire time. I needed to focus that skill inward and align with the deeper truth of who I was. Having already embodied the feeling of alignment, I trusted the process and it soon became a knowing. The truth did set me free but not in the way I was expecting.

Today I live in a constant state of trueing, living out my soul’s agreement to deliver my unique gifts to the world. I use my gifts in my work with women. It feels natural for me to be the Wayshower that knocks on women’s doors, and if they choose to open the door, I will show them the deeper truth of who they are. The Birthing Your True Self process is an action of trueing and I guide women one step at a time, enabling them to align with the deeper truth of who they are.
